The Single NPN Transistor Audio Preamp | HACK A WEEK

8/5/2011 · This common emitter amplifier configuration using an NPN transistor has many applications but is commonly used in audio circuits such as pre-amplifier and power amplifier stages. I powered this circuit with a single 3V coin battery I salvaged from an old computer motherboard. It works just fine at this low voltage because it’s just a preamp.

Amplifier - Wikipedia

The active device can be a vacuum tube, discrete solid state component, such as a single transistor, or part of an integrated circuit, as in an op-amp). Transistor amplifiers (or solid state amplifiers) are the most common type of amplifier in use today. A transistor is used as the active element.

In condenser mics, a bias current is needed to compensate the leakage in the microphone, and because of the pre-amplifier loading that discharge the condenser mic’s electrical charges. The microphone pre-amp described here provides input terminal for both microphone types, and uses only a single transistor as the active components.

9/1/2017 · One of the most common amplifier is the class A amplifier which basically uses a single transistor in Common-Emitter configuration to produce a large output voltage from a relatively small input voltage. However, its efficiency is very poor (around 30%) in comparison with a class B amplifier which has an efficiency of +70% or with a class D amplifier which efficiency exceeds +90%.
